Students who pass their qualifying examination anytime from October through March will be placed on academic probation if they have not defended their proposal by May 1 of the following year. The Program Director appoints the Dissertation Committee in consultation with the student’s adviser.
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of first-year online community college students on academic probation at a small, rural community college in central North Carolina. Four research questions guided the study: (RQ1) How do first-year, online community college students who are on academic probation describe their academic experiences?
At a highly-selective institution, academic probation is particularly complex given the institutional culture and expectations, and represents high stakes for both students and the institution. However, little is knows about the experience of academic probation at highly-selective institutions.
Prior to this role, he was a probation officer for eight years before he went on to train and mentor probation staff. Students are placed in the Academic Probation status after earning a cumulative GPA below 3.00. Students may also be placed on Academic Probation if they fail to make progress toward their degree, as determined by their Department or Program, or fail to meet provisional conditions as outlined in their admissions letter (if applicable.
Academic Standards and Probation. All graduate students are expected to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 during their entire course of study. Failure to do so may result in academic dismissal. Students who do not maintain a 'B' (3.0) average may be placed on academic probation.
